Depression can be felt in many different ways depending on the individual, you may experience feelings of sadness, tearfulness, anger, irritability, lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities or general low mood. Of course, every person experiences these feelings from time to time, it is the continuation for weeks or months that signal that there is a deeper problem and that it may be time to seek help.
It can be a single life event or a combination of events that trigger depression such as a bereavement, or difficult circumstances at home. Personality traits, family history, loneliness, alcohol and drug misuse or a serious illness are all factors that may increase your risk of depression. The type and severity of depression you may have can range from mild to severe and there are various treatment options are available depending on your needs. These include, talking to a counsellor or psychotherapist, medication, exercise, talking to friends, yoga or mindfulness.
